“Cauquière” most probably draws its origin from the Provençal verb Cauca; the milling – by treading – of sheaves of wheat or harvested grapes. Old accounts tell of big troughs that once stood at the end of the street for treading the grapes from the Charbonnier vineyards. Some people propose an alternative explanation, since “Cauquièro” is the Provencal word for tannery. No trace of activity linked to the preparation or tanning of leather has been found in the district to confirm this, however.
